Shot 102: INSIDE vs. OUTSIDE

By: Tom Newhouse in Leadership, 2 weeks ago

A Shot is a poignant leadership tip from “a rifle.”  Yes, leadership coach, Tom Newhouse, uses a rifle from his farming heritage to “tell it like it is.” —

WHAT ARE YOU MADE OF?  Time comes when people want to know what’s at your root.  They see outside achievements which give a clue, but only a clue.  The real you lies at your core.  So, the question unfolds:  What’s this person’s character?  That’s the inside stuff.   I’m only a rifle, but I yearn to always be in the hands of one with good character.
Yep, character trumps reputation.  Inside trumps outside.  Who wouldn’t want a good reputation?  But given a choice of following good reputation versus good character, character wins.   A leader with bad character is a train wreck waiting to happen.  Honesty, integrity, humility, compassion, trust, consistency, caring, courage—there’s a starter list.  Don’t think they matter?  Hang on to your stomach while you ponder their opposites.  Your followers yearn to be in the hands of one with good character.
