More importantly, I have a cat and he’s fluff-to-perfection! Holding him, sinking my hands into his fur transports me to fluff heaven.
Fluff as a business strategy? Not so much.
Hours can be used creating business cards, attending webinars and reading Facebook conversations which is great learning and too often random-fluffed-up.
As a business owner you want to focus your time and attention on the important tasks and projects which make money or lead to making money.
Saying “NO” to the activities that are on the fluffy side of your business priorities can be challenging. (Believe me, I know. Fluff is so fun and comfy.)
How do you recognize and prioritize the important stuff which drives you closer to achieving your business and life dreams rather than get caught up in the fluff, although enjoyable, yet nonessential to your business profitability?

Using David Perdew’s decision matrix, you’ll get a more complete understanding of what’s important to you so you can confidently say “NO” to the fluff and determine what’s a “HELL YEAH” for your business and personal success.
Let’s get started.
#1– Take a sheet of paper and draw a box. Insert a heart. Yes, that heart represents: YOU.
Instead of thinking outside the box the real treasure to think about is inside the box and that real treasure is you. 💛
Think while doing this: What is my treasure? How will I find it? How will I protect it?
You may want to reach out and ask for feedback.
For example, here’s an email I sent:
I’m gathering valuable feedback from the people who know me best: my family, friends, co-workers, mentors, coaches, teachers, and others. Since I consider you to be one of these key people in my life, I would greatly appreciate if you could help me out.
Would you be willing to take 10 minutes to complete the survey below? It’s only 4 questions. Your answers will help me tremendously as I consider what’s next for my life.
Then I asked:
1-From knowing and observing me, what do you think are my greatest talents and strengths? What gifts could I contribute to the world?
2-Do you have any stories of when you saw me performing at my best? Please relate a story or two of when you have seen me at the heights of excellence, performing to my full potential. What most impressed you?
3-In your opinion, what makes me most passionate, alive and engaged? What activities most put me into a state of enthusiasm and flow?
4-What potential career and professional paths could you see me becoming great at? And why?
I cherish the responses I got. Some surprised me–in a good way.
If you sent these questions to five people, who would they be?
#2– Label the top horizontal edge of the box: Core Values. This is WHO you are.
These are the beliefs you hold inside which cannot be violated around relationships, money, business, health, play/fun and well-being.
Examples include: I will do my part to maintain my own and others’ intellectual, physical and emotional health. I believe all people deserve to be treated with dignity and respect. Friends, family and business relations should know they can trust me to do what I say I will do.
What beliefs define WHO you are?
#3– Label the left edge of the box: Vision. Your potential possibility.
Without a clear vision, you don’t have a destination, without a destination you have no direction and without a direction you’re stuck where you are.
My vision example: I have scheduled five hours of coaching with talented people who are ready to go for it, whatever that is. There’s a lot of variety and challenge in our work, creativity, honest interaction, humor, uber learning and of course fantastic results. I’m free and flexible to work with people and projects which I believe I can add some value. My income exceeds $xxxx.xx monthly.
To Expand Your Vision, Ask– And then what?
Start with a simple vision statement…
I have five coaching hours scheduled a week. And then what?
I’m keeping the work I love and letting go of the work that’s tedious. And then what?
I’m having more fun and inspired to start new projects. And then what?
I’m having meaningful conversations in beautiful places, coaching 10 hours. And then what?
Got it? Now, it’s your turn.
#4– Label the right edge of the box: Guiding Principles. Your WHY.
Choose two words that sum up WHY it’s important to you. Nifty, isn’t it?
For example, mine are Freedom and Variety. I cherish both.
What’s your two words, your WHY?
#5– Label the bottom horizontal edge of the box: Future State. Your happiness and joy.
This is about knowing what you don’t want as much as what you do want. It represents your happiness and joy.
It’s a result of a combination of the other 3 edges. You’re building an image in your mind of where you want to be… how you get there exactly… you’re not supposed to know yet.
For example: I want to be free and relate to others in some way that is mutually meaningful. I don’t ever want to live with apathy about self, others, my community or the world. I stay actively involved and informed, always doing my part to uplift others while fiercely working to eliminate barriers and cruelty to all around the world, especially women, children and animals.
What’s your cool future state of happiness and joy?
If it’s not a “HELL YEAH” it’s a “NO BLOOMIN’ WAY.”
