Cinco de Mayo – Celebrate! 4 Key Learnings of Leadership

By: Lynn Anderson in #Cinco De Mayo, 3 years ago

“Cinco de Mayo” or translated as the 5th of May, is a holiday commemorating the Mexican army’s unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, under the leadership of Mexican General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguín.   While we all love to sip Margarita’s, there are 4 main takeaways which we Women Warrior Leaders can apply to leading our lives each and every day.

  1. Underdog’s do win! This holiday commemorates the victory of a small Mexican army against highly trained French forces.   What might look insurmountable on paper, can be overcome with focus, determination and grit.  What are you doing to win in your business or career?
  2. Passion with a purpose is a recipe for success! As warriors know, it’s not only the planning but most importantly the passion toward a common goal or purpose that is the “special ingredient” for success.  The Mexican’s had big hearts and passion in this battle which they used to overcome the odds to win.  As a leader, your passion and conviction might just be the difference in winning or losing key opportunities.  What is the passion that is fueling your success?  How are you applying your passions to the purpose of your business / career?  How can you incorporate your passion into the work you are doing?
  3. Celebrate Your Success. Don’t forget to celebrate your successes and use that momentum to propel you forward through thick and thin!   As leaders, it’s important to take time out of our busy schedules to celebrate our team’s accomplishments.  The energy we build from that celebration might be the difference in getting through a tough patch at work or at home.  Celebration is just as important as doing the task.  What types of celebrating have you (or will you) incorporate into your life?  What can you do to bring more opportunities to celebrate into your work and home life?
  4. Be Energized! The music and gusto behind Cinco De Mayo as well as the history of what was accomplished can energize not only the Mexican people but many others as well.  It’s an energy field that spreads goodwill to all who are touched by the tradition.  What are you doing to energize your team, your business, your family, your life to help catapult you to victory?  Using the full power of positivity and enthusiastically living each day, we can not only energize ourselves but energize those around us.   So as you lift your glass and salute the accomplishments (and fun) of Cinco de Mayo, challenge yourself to do things that can energize and motivate you and those around you.  Just a simple thank you or smile can make a big difference.  Instead of pointing out what someone is doing wrong or can do to improve, focus on what they are doing right and their positive contribution to the team.  Appreciating the small things that those around you do for you every day, can serve as an energizer and propel the whole team forward.  When you appreciate others, their energy can be infectious and they want to work even harder for you and with you.   Start an energy revolution today!

Salute to you and those around you for being a Woman Warrior!  Be a leader in your life.  I hope you can use these 4 simple lessons from Cinco de Mayo to energize your leadership skills and those around you.   Enjoy the Margarita’s!
