In reading a book called The Happiness Advantage by Shawn Achor, he tells the story of going to a school in Soweto in South Africa. He asked the children, “Who here likes to do schoolwork?” thinking many of the children would enthusiastically respond that they did not like schoolwork. The result was the opposite. About 95% smiled and said they enjoyed it!
He asked his host later why that was the case. The host said because “they see schoolwork as a privilege.”
He later reflected that students who are “so focused on the stress and the pressure – the ones that [see] learning as a chore” are missing out on the opportunities. Those who look at learning as a privilege “shine brighter.”
When thinking about your business or your career, do you focus on the stress or the pressure? Do you see getting up every day and doing what you do as a chore or as a privilege? If you look at it as a chore, how can you change your mindset?
It is surprising how simply changing how you look at things can color your world so that you enthusiastically WANT to do what you do…even if you have to force yourself at first.
Each and every day we are given is a privilege and an opportunity. It is a chance to shine and show the world who you are and what you have. It is a chance to learn and grow. It is a chance to help others.
What privilege do you want to bring into your world each day?
Today, I have the privilege of doing ______? Fill in the blank.
