6 M’s that Matter
As an entrepreneur, I am learning many new life lessons that seem to be at the core of becoming a successful entrepreneur. I’m going to use the next few blogs to share my journey in hopes that it might clarify, and hopefully bring meaning, to your personal experiences as you venture out into an unknown, and often, what seems to be a frightening and overwhelming new world. I would encourage you to consider seriously 6 M’s that matter. These life lessons have allowed me to birth three successful companies, engage in writing and speaking engagements and watch my bank account grow and my life to be more fulfilling.
Many entrepreneurs begin their journey motivated by money, life mission or desire to control their own life. It is critical to be clear about what is motivating or driving your desire to break away from the 9 to 5 world and work for yourself! Consider:
- What financial goals do you have for the next year?
- What will life be like as you strive for the goals?
- What will life be like when you achieve your goals?
Money is not a bad motivation…unknown and unembraced motivation will never lead to more money. Live your dream, set your goals and grab the life you want.
Do what you love, and money will come! Not only a great book and book title but a path through fears, anxieties to a life of deeper meaning, clearer mission and personal and professional fulfillment. I have experienced this over and over. While launching out on your own is not risk-free, nor is it free of anxiety or fear…it is filled with opportunities to learn, to grow, to collaborate and to connect your life dream and mission to the work/play you enjoy each day. You see I say work/play because now, much of my daily work (and I work hard) is play. I love what I do! I enjoy getting up each morning! I also love seeing my bank account grow which gives me the opportunity to help many I want to help and enjoy things I want to enjoy.
- What will bring your life greater meaning?
- What is the mission that drives you and will motivate you?
As you begin your entrepreneurial journey, know that momentum is critical. A clear mission that drives you will create a forward moving momentum. An unclear mission and a lack of meaning typically create a diminishing momentum. A coach keeps me focused, and coaching will keep you focused. So the momentum is positive, nurturing of your dreams, fulfilling and fun! There are very few months I go without a formal coaching relationship. (My coach and I arrived at my blog topics!) I’ve found coaching supports me as I face anxieties, frustrations, fears and keeps me focused on my mission!
- What’s getting in your way of positive momentum?
- What do you need to keep moving forward now?
Staying focused on your meaning and mission requires keeping the message clear – for you, for your colleagues, for your clients.
- What is it you are about?
- How will my/our mission impact the lives of others?
- How do we best communicate a clear message of our mission?
A mantra is a short, memorable and meaningful phrase that refocuses you and keeps you on track with your mission. We all need something to pull us back when busyness, distress, discouragement distract us (and it will)!
- What is your mantra phrase that refocuses you and keeps you on track?
Last, but certainly not least, we need some way to regularly evaluate how we are doing when it comes to our goals/mission.
- What are your signs of success?
- What are the indicators to regularly assess?
- How will you know when you are ‘off track’?
These are my 6 M’s… and a few of the coaching questions I use to help keep me on track, focused. Learning ourselves, our styles and mission is key to being successful. My coaches help me…. If you believe I can support your journey as coach email me and let’s talk about it.
